Using a Firewood Rack

Firewood can be messy. The bark falls off and their is little slivers of wood and bark around the wood pile. That is why you don't want a wood pile! You need a firewood rack for a neat looking stack. Sure, you will still have some back and wood chips around the rack, but they will be easy to sweep up when the wood is contained on the rack instead of leaning against the house or in a pile on the ground. The best way to avoid firewood mess is to select a far corner of your yard to cut the wood into fireplace size logs and then load it into a firewood cart or wheelbarrow. Then take it to the firewood rack that is close to the house and stack it neatly so it is ready to use. The stacking part is a good chore for kids!

A firewood rack is a great thing for so many reasons. First of all, a firewood rack will keep your wood neatly stacked. Having your wood in some kind of order just looks nicer. Plus it makes it easier to grab a couple of logs for the fireplace. Wood thrown in a heap is just plain messy!

Next, a firewood rack reduces rodent and insect problems. Firewood piles tend to attract rodents and other pests that use them for their winter homes. The problem is, many times these rodents see the big warm home near by and try to move in to your home. With a firewood rack, you will be able to have your firewood lifted off the ground a few inches so a lot of pests will not be able to get too it. In addition, many racks have wheels so you can easily move it to another location if you find you are having problems with pests in a certain place. Just a note - there is really no way to completely keep pests out of your firewood so make sure you check your wood for hitchhikers before you take it in the house. This is not a usually a problem with rodents, but some insects.

A firewood rack can help keep your wood dry. You can either place your fireplace rack under a patio awning or get a cover that fits your rack. If you place your firewood rack close to your home it is already semi protected from the elements, but if you add a cover it will ensure your wood will stay dry and ready to burn. You don't need to purchase a commercial firewood cover, although many are made to fit the firewood rack. A tarp and some elastic cords is a great way to cover your firewood as well.

As far as firewood rack sizes, there are many to choose from. You can get large racks that will hold a lot of wood. These racks are great for people who live in very cold climates and rely on wood for their primary fuel. They are also good if you have a place where you can put the firewood rack. However, many people have limited space or they don't need a lot of wood for the winter. If this is the case, you can find smaller racks that will hold enough wood for a few days. A small firewood rack would also work great inside the house positioned by the fire. This will make it really easy to through another log on when the fire starts to die!

A firewood rack is a great way to keep your firewood organized, dry, and relatively free from pests.  Not to mention a firewood rack makes it so much easier to fully enjoy a blazing fire!

Why Do You Need a Firewood Cart?

Many of use store large piles of wood for our winter fires. However, you don’t want to stack your wood next to your home. Why? Well, in addition to providing you fuel for your fire, the wood may provide a winter home for rodents. For this reason you want to make sure your wood pile is far from your home so you don’t have unwanted guests moving in!

With a firewood cart, you can have your wood pile or firewood rack a good distance from your home yet you will be able to easily haul wood for a day. Most firewood carts have heavy duty wheels that will allow you to go over rough terrain and even snow. You can put enough wood to fuel your fire for a day or two on the cart and then store the firewood cart close on the deck or patio where you can easily get to it. But you won’t have to worry about rodents moving in since you will have a smaller wood pile that you will use quickly.

You will find a firewood cart in both large and small models, so you will easily be able to find a cart that will haul the amount of wood you need. Generally, a firewood cart will also double as a small firewood rack for storing small amounts of wood. However, some wood carts will only carry a few logs or enough for one fire.

A firewood cart is typically made of tubular steel and usually has a durable coating such as powder coating to prevent corrosion. This is great for a firewood cart since it will be exposed to the elements! You can also find carts that are made of canvas with a steel frame. A nice thing about a canvas firewood cart is the canvas lining will contain all the mess from the wood making it possible to bring the cart right into the house without worrying about the debris it will bring in.

Some carts also come with a cover. This makes it nice if you are going to leave wood on your firewood cart. You can put the cover over it and if it snows or rains you wood will stay nice and dry!

A firewood cart is a must have if you have a wood burning fireplace or stove. You can store your wood away from your home to keep the rodents away, but still be able to have plenty of wood to burn close by.

A Shopping Cart has Many Uses

There are many reasons why you would want to buy a shopping cart, and most of them have nothing to do with grocery shopping! Sure, they do make a wonderful grocery cart but that should not be their only purpose. Let’s look at all the things you can do with a folding shopping cart.

Use it as a garden cart. A shopping cart is usually deeper than it is wide so that makes it perfect for moving long handled garden tools around the yard. Have you ever tried to pile your shovels and hoes on a wheelbarrow and then move it? It can turn into quite the balancing act! But if you use a shopping cart you can easily move your tools without worrying that they will slide off. A beach caddy is such a great help when you are going to the beach. In fact, you can use it for so much more than just beach days. Use it to go to the park, ball games, camping, if you need to haul a lot of gear for fun and beach caddy is the way to do it!

With most beach carts, you can carry everything you need for a fun day in one trip. Beach chairs, umbrellas, even a cooler for snacks - all of this and more can fit on your beach caddy.

Family Recycling is Educational

Many children believe that all trash goes in the garbage can where it gets trucked off to the landfill.  While it is good that they know to put garbage in its place rather than littering, we need to make them aware of what can be recycled.  While they may learn some of the basics at school, it is up to parents to teach by example. A family recycling project is the best way to do that!

To start your family recycling project, you will need a recycling cart or even just a few bins or plastic boxes. Have several recycling bins in your home. One each for plastic, aluminum, green waste, newspapers, etc.  Spend an evening talking with your family about the bins and what goes in them. Teach them about how the different things are taken to recycling centers and made into new products.  This is an important step in your family recycling endeavor. The kids need to know where the items go and what happens to them after they put them in the bin.  If you can find a video of a recycling plant or even arrange a tour it will make a big impact on your family. Once they realize what happens to the waste they will be more likely to recycle.

Assign one person to be in charge of the bins each week.  If you have curbside recycling, that person will be responsible for getting the bins to the curb. If you have to take your waste to a central location, have the person in charge help load the bins in the car and empty them when you get to the recycling center.

Part of family recycling is teaching kids to use it up! We live in a very disposable world and that is showing in our overflowing landfills. If everyone would get the full use out of products it would save both money and space in the landfills.  We need to start using less disposable products and making the disposable things we do have last longer. Make a game out of your family recycling project by trying to create less trash. Have your family try to fill the garbage can half as much as you usually do in a week.

Recycling will become a way of life if you take the time to make it part of your daily routine. Get in the habit and teach by example. With your family recycling project, soon your family will become more conscious of the waste they create, and you will be on your way to having a green family!

Why Use a Recycling Cart?

Did you know that about 65 to 85 percent of household waste can be recycled? Yet, we send an average of 80 percent of our waste to the landfills. As a result our landfills are reaching capacity at an alarming rate. When you figure that according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American produces about 29 pounds of waste per week, that is a lot of garbage! What is really alarming is that around 35 percent of the waste in landfills is paper waste, which is one of the easiest things to recycle!

So what can you do? Get a recycling cart and start a family recycling project! Sure, it will be hard at first - old habits are hard to break. But once you get in the recycling mode, you will have a hard time tossing a newspaper in the garbage and you wouldn't think about tossing that apple core in the trash. Recycling and composting are better than the landfill!

Now you don't need to have a large recycling cart like the one pictured, although a large one does make it easier to recycle large quantities of waste. You can start with a small recycling cart with bins for paper, aluminum, glass and plastic. These are generally the things that people start recycling with and they are the items that will make up the bulk of your recycling.

If you are fortunate enough to live in an area that has curbside recycling then a recycling cart makes it even easier to make sure your waste is ready for pickup. Remember, you don't need a fancy recycling cart. Any utility cart or platform truck can become a recycling cart. Just simply set your bins or totes on it and haul it to the curb!

Now, many people live in an area where the sanitation company provides homeowners with a large trash can that has wheels that make it easy to move to the curb.  But even if you live in such an area, a garbage cart can be a good investment.

If you have curbside recycling, you can use a garbage cart to haul your recycling bins to the curb for pickup. You can also use a trash trolley to hold trash cans for yard waste, etc. If you do much outdoor entertaining, a garbage cart makes it simple to put a couple of trash cans close by so guests can dispose of their waste. Being able to put the waste containers where you need them will help keep your area cleaner and reduce the time you will spend on clean up after the party.

When you are shopping for a garbage cart, it is best to get one that will hold two trash cans. You may only have one garbage can to put in it now, but that could change. The most common type of folding platform truck is the kind that has a flatbed area with a handle that folds down flat. This particular type of cart is very versatile and so handy. Personally, I have used this type of cart in my business to haul supplies - both office and general, to different areas where they are needed. We use it to moves heavy cases of paper from storage to the copy room. In fact, we have more than one platform cart because they are always being used by someone!

One of my favorite ways to use this type cart is to take the garbage out to the dumpster. A folding platform cart can hold several small office trash cans or one or two large garbage cans. It makes short work of taking care of the garbage duties at the end of the day, and for a small business every minute saved is money in the bank!

What Type of Lawn Cart to Get

A garden utility cart comes in many different models. However, probably the most sought after lawn cart is a cart with a seat.  Models such as the Ames Lawn Buddy are a hit with consumers because not only do you have a place to sit while you work, but you can store small garden tools in the compartment under the seat.  Now this cart isn't what you would use to haul big loads, but it is perfect to carry seeds, small bedding plants and your tools to the area you want to work in.
